What do you desire questions.

Romans 8:5-11

5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you.

📖 Bible Study —

“Why Do I Do What I Don’t Want to Do?”

The Passage

14 We know that the law is spiritual, but I am not. I am so human. Sin rules me as if I were its slave. 15 I don’t understand why I act the way I do. I don’t do the good I want to do, and I do the evil I hate. 16 And if I don’t want to do what I do, that means I agree that the law is good. 17 But I am not really the one doing the evil. It is sin living in me that does it. 18 Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me—I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is not spiritual. I want to do what is good, but I don’t do it. 19 I don’t do the good that I want to do. I do the evil that I don’t want to do. 20 So if I do what I don’t want to do, then I am not really the one doing it. It is the sin living in me that does it.

🔍 What Paul Is Saying (Plain Language)

Paul is being honest with yourself and others.

He’s saying:

  • I know what’s right

  • I want to do what’s right
    But I still mess up

This is not weakness — it’s self-awareness.

Paul is describing the inner battle every human faces:

  • Flesh vs. Spirit

  • Desire vs. discipline

  • Knowing better vs. doing better

Even one of the greatest leaders in the Bible struggled.

Every athlete knows this feeling:

  • You say you’ll stay disciplined… then choose to take a day off.

Who has done this?

  • You say you won’t complain - then hate the next practice.

Who has done this?

  • You say you’ll be locked in… then lose focus right after.

The issue isn’t knowledge - The issue is control.

Both in life and in sport. Coaches can only get you so far.

🔑 The Key Lesson

Paul doesn’t stop in Romans 7.

He ends with this question:

“Who will deliver me from this body of death?”

— Romans 7:24

Then he answers it in Romans 8:1:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Translation:

  • You will struggle

  • You will fall short

  • But you are not condemned

  • And you are not alone

Growth doesn’t come from shame — it comes from dependence.

🔥 Team Challenge

Ask yourself:

  • Where do I know the right thing… but don’t do it?

  • Where do I need discipline, not excuses?

  • Where do I need accountability, not emotion?

Maturity is not being perfect. - Maturity is fighting the right battles.

When you carry all of the weight of worry in your arms,

you can't catch what God is trying to throw at you.

I am not where I want to be. But thank God I am not where I used to be.

52-day challenge.

Accountability Partner

Paul admitted to himself and told others about areas where he lacked.

We can do the same.

Guilt in the Bible

Guilt - sell your possessions, Judas, prodigal son. Any other stories? I was going into Ollie's with Callie.  A guy on a bike approached...
