Hope Does Not Disappoint

 Hope Does Not Disappoint

June 21, 2023

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Romans 5:3-5

Big Idea - We have hope because of the love God shows us each and every day.

verse 3

And not only so - We not only rejoice in times of prosperity, and of health. Paul proceeds to show that this plan is not less adapted to produce support in trials.

The meaning is, that we rejoice not only in hope; not only in the direct results of justification, in the immediate effect which religion itself produces; but we carry our joy and triumph even into the midst of trials.

In tribulations - In afflictions. The word used here refers to all kinds of trials which people are called to endure;

Knowing - Being assured of this. Paul’s assurance might have arisen from reasoning on the nature of religion, and its tendency to produce comfort;

or it is more probable that he was speaking here the language of his own experience. He had found it to be so.

This was written near the close of his life, and it states the personal experience of a man who endured, perhaps, as much as anyone ever did, in attempting to spread the gospel;

Yet he, like all other Christians, could leave his deliberate testimony to the fact that Christianity was sufficient to sustain the soul in its severest trials;

Worketh - Produces; the effect of afflictions on the minds of Christians is to make them patient.

Sinners are irritated and troubled by them; they complain, and become more and more obstinate and rebellious.

they deem God a hard master; and they become fretful and rebellions just in proportion to the depth and continuance of their trials.

But we glory in tribulations also - All the sufferings we endure for the testimony of our Lord are so sanctified to us by his grace, that they become powerful instruments of increasing our happiness.

Tribulation worketh patience - Ὑπομονην, Endurance under trials, without sustaining loss or deterioration.

patience is a grace, of which God is the author; it is one of the fruits of the Spirit; the word of God is the means of its being first implanted; and afflictions are the means of promoting it, when they are sanctified

otherwise they produce impatience, murmurings, and repinings; there is great need of patience under them; and, by divine grace, they are the matter and occasion of exercising, and so of increasing it.

verse 4

hope is a gift of God's grace,

Full proof, by trial, of the truth of our religion, the solidity of our Christian state, and the faithfulness of our God. I

Experience, hope - For we thus calculate, that he who has supported us in the past will support us in those which may yet come;

verse 5

As a vain hope does, things not answering to expectation, it deceives, and is lost;

By "the love of God" is meant, not that love by which we love God, for hope does not depend upon, nor is it supported by our love and obedience to God;

Now the love which the Spirit sheds abroad in the heart, is the source and spring, both of justification itself, which is owing to the free grace of God, and of all the effects of it, as peace with God, access to the throne of grace, rejoicing in hope of the glory of God, the usefulness of afflictions, and the stability of hope, and is here alleged as the reason of all.

And hope maketh not ashamed - A hope that is not rationally founded will have its expectation cut off; and then shame and confusion will be the portion of its possessor.

We have the most solid and convincing testimony of God’s love to us, by that measure of it which he has communicated to our hearts.

This love is the spring of all our actions; it is the motive of our obedience; the principle through which we love God, we love him because he first loved us; and we love him with a love worthy of himself, because it springs from him:

Because the love of God - Love toward God. There is produced an abundant, an overflowing love to God.

it is meant that Christians are under his sanctifying influence; that he produces in their hearts the Christian graces; and fills their minds with peace, and love, and joy.

The Holy Spirit is thus represented as dwelling in the hearts of believers;

 Sit Down with God

Paul said - to die is gain.

Why? to be with God for forever.

David wanted to meet God all through out his life.

Moses had a relationship with God.

Gideon was called by God. God sent many angels to Gideon to guide and direct him.

Psalm 16:11 - "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

David's relationship with God allowed him to have the faith he needed to defeat Goliath. Saul said to David - "Go, and the Lord be with you!"

Daily David needed God to intervene in his job. God protected David from the elements related to the reality of his job. David was in the wilderness caring for the animals.

Psalm 16:1-2 - "Preserve me, O God, for in your I take refuge. I say to the Lord, 'You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.'"

Do you seek the presence of God on a daily basis?

Do you feel the presence of God like David did?

Your heavenly father longs to meet with you. Because of Jesus you have access to the heart of God.

How can you center you life around the presence of God?

1. Meditate on longing for the presence of God.

    a. Prayer - deep pray. Time alone with God. Find God and talk to him.

    b. Reading your Bible - Get along with God and read God's word.

    c. Fellowship - spend time with other believers to find the presence of God.

    d. Worship - spend time in adoration through worship.

2. Find the presence of God through other scriptures.

    a. all scripture is God breathed.

Jeremiah 29:13 - "You will seek me and fine me, when you seek me with all of your heart"

3. Take time to meet with God.

    a. Sacrifice your time to spend it with God.

    b. Sacrifice your resources to spend it with God.

Psalm 84:10 - "For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. i would rather be a doorkeeper in your house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness."

What can you change to center you life around Christ and his presence?

Set your priorities and allow the world to fill in around it.

Don't fit God into your life.

Spend time with God.

It changed David's life.

It changed Moses' life.

It can change yours too.

Dead to Sin - Alive in Christ

Dead to Sin - Alive in Christ

Romans 6:10-11 - ERV

10 Yes, when Christ died, he died to defeat the power of sin one time—enough for all time. He now has a new life, and his new life is with God. 11 In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive for God through Christ Jesus.

When Christ died. This is the beginning of our Hope. Believe in this first. Christ came onto this earth, sent by the Father (God) and lived a perfect life so that you can have hope.

He did this once. For the wages of sin is death. Before Christ came we deserved death when we would choose to fall short of the glory of God.

Sin is a choice.

Jesus living a perfect life was a choice.

Jesus chose to do that for you.

His death defeats the power of sin for forever.

When Jesus died he went back to heaven to be with God. When we die we get to be in heaven forever with Jesus. You get to live a new life here on earth knowing that is the future.

Live like you have the power over sin. Why? Because you do. God sent Jesus and Jesus died so that you do have the power over sin.

Dead to Sin - Alive in Christ.

Change your behavior. Act like Jesus has died for you. Serve like Jesus died for you. Love like Jesus died for you.

Why?

Because he did.

Your freedom comes from knowing that Jesus died for you.

Your hope comes from know that Jesus died for you.

How can you apply this lesson to your life today?

What kind of impact will you have with the people around you today?

Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

When was the last time you had an encounter with God?

When was the last time your conversation or time with God led to something transformational?

God has not left you.

By faith we meet with God.

By faith we believe our hope is in Him.

By faith we seek more of a relationship with Christ.

Romans 10:17 - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Faith is simply a response to God's promises and faithfulness.

Have you felt God knocking on your door?

What do you do with it?

God is available to you. He will come to you. But you can go to him. God is not off limits.

Consistently pursue conversation and time with God.

Meditate on the importance of drawing near to God.

Matthew 21:22 - And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive if you have faith.

Pursue God in faith.

God will guide you into an encounter to experience his love.

Rest in the presence of your heavenly father.

What is your foundation?

Allow God's love to lay a foundation of grace, joy, peace, and purpose in your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 - You will seek me and fine me, when you seek me with all your heart.

God want to be a part of your life.

God wants you to go to him.

God want you to spend time with you.

How will you apply this to your life?

Pray that you and God will come together through and for faith.

James 1:14-15

14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

God's Love

Roman's 12:9-10 - Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly love. Out do one another in showing honor.

See yourself as God sees you.

Walk more powerfully in the Spirit.

Genuine love sets you apart.

1 Corinthians 13:13 - Greats of these is love.

Matthew 22:40 - Love your neighbor as yourself.

You were created to give and receive love.

God has chosen to show love through you life. You are the love of God that someone needs today. God be love. Show love to someone because God loves you.

1. Spend time receiving God's love.

2. Ask God to mold you and shape you into what he wants you to be.

Allow God to change your heart.

3. Who around you today needs your love?

John 13:34 - A new command that I give to you that you love one another. Just as I have loved you you are also to love one another.

Accept God's love.

Allow God's love to fill you up each and every day.

Why?

So that you can pour out God's love into other's lives. You were called to love well.

What are ways you can love better this week?

How can you allow God to love you better?

What will you change so that you will show God's love to others?

Apply this to your life this week. Love others like Jesus loves you.

Pray -

Jesus I pray that as we live our lives we will take opportunities to show the love of God to those around us. I pray that we will love those that no one else loves. I pray that we will love those we do love better. I pray that this week we will take an action of love as we go through out our day.

Amen.

Faith - It’s what you need!

Faith - it’s what you need!
1 Corinthians 2:5
That your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

How do you define faith?
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=19hBbgjyJd5B71uDb-1cJ_5j17gPz9ODv

Heb 11:1  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen
Without faith we lose all that Christ died to give us.
Faith is our lifeblood. Without faith we have nothing.
How do you gain trust?
Faith is the natural response to a revelation of Gods faithfulness- or trust
Abel trusted in Fods faithfulness but giving more at the alter.
Who else trusted in god’s faithfulness? David and Goliath Moses and the Red Sea.Abraham and Isaac.
Hebrews 11:6 - without faith it is impossible to please him.
Where do you lack faith today?
What have you taken into your own hands?
Where are you full of fear, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness?
1. Meditate on the scriptures that define faith.
Roman’s 4:20-211 Corinthians 2:5Hebrews 11:1
2. Reflect on any area where you struggled with faith. a. Love or do on your own.b. Fear or anxiety that win
God wants to work in your life to show you who he is.

Your God loves you. Your God cares for you. Your God is for you.
Abundant life comes through faith in Jesus.
How can you apply what you learned today?

Guilt in the Bible

Guilt - sell your possessions, Judas, prodigal son. Any other stories? I was going into Ollie's with Callie.  A guy on a bike approached...
