1️⃣ Anointed… But Not Appointed Yet
The prophet Samuel anoints David as the future king while Saul is still on the throne (1 Samuel 16).
David is just a shepherd boy.
He receives the promise —but not the position.
Lesson: God may reveal your future long before you step into it.
2️⃣ Serving the King Who Hates Him
David is brought into King Saul’s court to play harp music.
Later he defeats Goliath, becomes famous, and Saul grows jealous.
Saul tries to kill him multiple times.
David goes from palace musician → national hero → fugitive.
Lesson: The waiting season may look like loss instead of progress.
3️⃣ Years in the Wilderness
David spends YEARS hiding in caves, running for his life.
At one point, he has the chance to kill Saul in a cave — and end the waiting immediately.
He refuses.
He says he will not touch “the Lord’s anointed.”
David chooses patience over promotion.
Lesson: Just because you can take something doesn’t mean you should.
4️⃣ The Slow Fulfillment
After Saul dies, David becomes king of Judah only — not all Israel.
More waiting.
Finally, around age 30, David becomes king over all Israel (2 Samuel 5).
He was anointed as a teenager.
That’s roughly 10–15 years of waiting.
What Was God Doing in the Waiting?
While David waited, he was:
Learning leadership in the wilderness
Building loyalty with men
Developing humility
Writing psalms
Deepening dependence on God
The cave prepared him for the crown.
